BRAINTREE Town manager Jamie Day feels he still needs to do some tinkering with his Iron squad.

It has been a tough start to the Vanarama National League season after a summer of rebuilding following an exodus of players from last year’s squad and they sit in the relegation zone heading into Saturday’s home game against Forest Green Rovers.

Day feels his new-look team have been developing in recent weeks, but he still wants to make changes to help them push up the league.

He said: “I think we’re probably one or two players away from where we would like to be, but I have to make sure that the players that I want are available, whether that is as a loan or otherwise.

“But we aren’t far away.

“We have enough forwards; I think they haven’t always been clicking, but we have people who can score goals and I feel it will fall into place.

“I’ve brought in a centre-half with Jack Cowgill coming in on loan from Barnsley, which was partly due to Jake [Goodman] being out with a head injury and Gayley [Ian Gayle] suspended, but also because we have been conceding too many goals.

“So I may need to sort that a bit more on a longer-term and I also think we need a creative midfielder who can get the ball in deeper positions and get us playing a bit more.

“So those are two positions I will be looking at.

“There are one or two around, but I have to make sure I bring the right ones in.”

However, two members of the Braintree squad haven’t met the level that the manager wanted to see and they have moved on.

“Rhodell [Gordon] and Zach [Fagan] have both been released because at the moment we have been carrying 19 players,” added Day.

“We gave them the opportunity and I felt they didn’t really take it so it was time to shuffle the pack around and free up a bit of money in the budget to make sure there was money there if I wanted to make changes.”
