Braintree Town manager Jamie Day says he wants to bring some more seasoned heads to strengthen the spine of his Iron team.

Day has been busy building his team ahead of the start of the Vanarama National League season and has been delighted to land rising talent like midfielder Harry Lee and right-back Barney Williams.

But he admits one of his chief priorities now is looking to bring in some more experienced players to his team to complement the youngsters he has in his squad.

The Iron boss has the experience of former Premier League striker Lee Barnard on board and wants to add more down the centre of the pitch.

He said: “We need to add a bit of experience to help the younger lads we have signed so will be looking to add down the spine.”

Day’s plans have been affected a bit by news this week that the Vanarama National League has scrapped the transfer window this season with restrictions on when players can be signed by top-flight clubs.

“I think with the window going, it will help us to have a smaller squad and use the loan system when needed,” added Day.

And the Iron boss has also been building his managerial team with the addition of Danny Chapman as his assistant manager and he believes he will be a good fit for the club.

Day said: “Danny and I played together at Dover and remained good friends. He is good young coach who is looking for a chance and we felt this would be a great opportunity for us to work together.”
