Will Jackson felt that Braintree Cricket Club’s batting display against Copford showed the need for players to be selective in their aggressive approach.

Braintree ended up winning their Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship division one clash thanks to a strong performance with the ball, but captain Jackson is asking players to think about how they attack with the bat after they were all out for just 121 in 28 overs.

He said: “Some overnight rain didn’t help us, but that’s no excuse as there were some loose shots in there.

“Not everyone, but some were loose and I think we need to be more disciplined with our batting.

“We got off to a good start and were going at five or six and over, but it’s about controlling the aggression.

“I don’t want to stop people playing their natural game and being aggressive, but when we have batted for 50 overs, we’ve shown that we can post 380, and I want people to realise they don’t have to do it too early.

“It’s easy to get a bit carried away, so we just need a bit more discipline. I want people to play their shots and their natural game, but being disciplined and knowing when to us their aggression.”

However, the skipper had praise for how his team turned a tough position around in the second half of the game.

He added: “Copford’s overseas bowler (Tim Richards) really led the way for them and took six wickets with some good inswingers, but we had a mixture where all six bowlers did well.

“We had a variety of spin and seam, with five of the six taking wickets and Josh (Newman), who didn’t take a wicket, also bowled very well indeed. It was good to see everyone contributing and it allowed us to build pressure with good partnerships.”
