Their 3-0 win against title rivals Three Elms B has handed Onley Arms the Essex Invitation Petanque League crown.

The top two met in a title-decider at Bocking, with each team starting the day with 30 points with two games to play.

For home side Onley, David Bird, Trevor Blows and Daniel Blows took the triples 13-5, before Trevor Blows came back from a 7-5 deficit to win the singles 13-7 and Bird and Daniel Blows wrapped up the title as they claimed the pairs 13-10.

Onley Arms can’t be caught now at the summit whatever the result of the final round of games as they have a superior points difference.

Meanwhile, Bocking Weavers hosted a confident Blackwater U3A team that had beaten Three Elms B before Easter.

The Blackwater trio of Peter Harden, Brian Butcher and Ron Martin took a 10-4 lead but their inconsistent form returned as the Weavers came back to win 13-11.

Callum Finn, fresh from National Junior training, beat Harden 13-5 in the singles and the Weavers clinched a 3-0 win with Mark Williams and Paul Griffin beating Butcher and Ken Hardy 13-5.

After a poor start to the season the Weavers have won half their second half games but just failed to avoid last place in the league.
