An evening of stories from winning the World Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Cup will be helping young Braintree footballers continue their careers later this month.

Legendary Tottenham Hotspur duo Osvaldo Ardiles and Micky Hazard are coming to Braintree Town for a special evening on October 21 when they will recount tales of two stunning careers in the game.

Ardiles famously won the World Cup with Argentina in 1978 before going on to join Spurs and become an iconic player of the early 1980s where he was a team-mate of Hazard’s as the duo were part of the team that enjoyed FA Cup glories in 1981 and 1982.

They also picked up UEFA Cup winners’ medals in 1984 as Tottenham beat Anderlecht, but Hazard said it’s not necessarily just an evening for Spurs fans.

“It’s an opportunity to spend an evening with a World Cup winner,” he told the Times.

“Ossie and I are good friends, but I still find it surreal that here I am sitting in the company of someone who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1978 – it’s quite incredible.

“So it’s an opportunity not just for Spurs fans but for all fans to hear some amazing stories.

“We could spend two years continuously telling stories as there is so much to tell, so we leave it to the audience as to what stories they want to hear.

“The fans pay to come for the evening and it’s down to them as to what they want to hear.”

An auction of rare footballing memorabilia will also be held during the evening and the event is to raise money to help young footballers from the Braintree Town Academy to progress into senior football. A partnership has been formed between the Academy and Silver End United to keep young players in the game and cash raised will help with subs for those who can’t afford to keep playing.

Silver End manager, Greg Wise, said: “There will be some Academy lads who don’t make it to (Braintree) first-team level so we have fixed an arrangement where we can take those lads at Silver End as 16 or 17 year olds and get them into men’s football.

“We don’t want them to be lost to football if they don’t break into the Braintre first team or reserves so have started this partnership, but they have to pay subs to play at our level and to make it work we won’t charge them for playing for us at Silver End.

“I’m passionate about giving them a chance so we’re running this evening at Braintree on October 21 to raise money to help out.

“It will be a fantastic evening with a World Cup winner and someone who has won the UEFA Cup and the FA Cup twice.

“How many times can you say you have that at Braintree Town?”

Hazard added: “The bottom line is that there is only so much room in the pro game for youngsters so there must be a place for younger players who aren’t quite good enough to get to the top.

“Clubs like Braintree and Silver End give them a place to play the sport they love. I’ve been involved in developing younger players for a lot of years so this is a cause that is close to my heart.

“I was blessed to be a professional footballer and it has given me so much, but putting something back like this at grassroots level is so rewarding.”

An Evening with Ossie Ardiles and Micky Hazard starts at 7.45pm on October 21 in the clubhouse at Braintree Town and tickets, including a buffet, cost £30.

Tickets must be bought in advance by contacting Wise by email at gmwise3@gmail.com or on 07710 647735 and all proceeds will go to Braintree Town FC and Silver End FC.
