Assistant boss Alan Kimble hailed Witham Town’s FA Cup replay win at Brightlingsea Regent as being a “massive” one for the club.

Not only was their 3-2 preliminary round victory at North Road Witham’s first win of the season and earned them £1,925 in prize money, the manner of their success was important.

Having been on the wrong end of defensive errors and costly late goals in the early part of the season, it was Witham’s turn to profit from a mistake at the back this time as substitute Jordan Pavett pounced to score in injury-time and take them into the first qualifying round.

“It was nice for us to be the ones to score in the last minute, rather than the other way round,” said assistant maanger Kimble.

“It was end-to-end stuff and we showed a bit of resilience, to keep retaking the lead.

“We kept getting our noses in front, only to be pegged back.

“But we showed guts, determination and character to keep going until the very end.

“That was the most pleasing thing and it was a fantastic feeling to hear the final whistle.

“It’s great to get our first win on the board and it will give the lads a lot of confidence going into Saturday.

“It’s a massive result for the club.

“It generates income and can make a big difference to the budget, when it comes to bringing in better quality players that are going to take us to the next level.”

Kimble has now challenged the players to build on that when they return to Ryman League division north action against Wroxham at home tomorrow (kick-off 3pm).

“We’ve got to use this momentum to our advantage and if the lads keep showing the same effort, desire and application, we should start climbing the league,” he added.
