Their Robert Dyas League Cup outing against Maldon & Tiptree will give some of Witham Town’s players a chance to stake their claim in manager Garry Kimble’s plans.

Witham host the Jammers in the first round of this year’s competition at the Village Glass Stadium tonight looking for their first win of the season after taking just one point from their opening three games in Ryman League division north.

Kimble has been disappointed with individual errors that have cost his team in those opening few games and will give some members of his squad who haven’t featured so far a chance to shine in tonight’s League Cup fixture.

He said: “We will take it seriously but our bread and butter is the league.

“It will give me the chance to play some of the lads who have been on the fringes so far.

“It will give me a chance to have a look at them and places are up for grabs as some of the players who have featured in the first three games of the season may need a kick up the backside.

“I’m not panicking, but I’ll make changes if I think I need to.”

Tom Devaux is likely to come in for his first start of the season.

The former Colchester United trainee featured for Witham in their pre-season campaign, but has had a slight calf problem that has kept him out so far.

Maldon & Tiptree and Witham have both faced the same three teams in their opening trio of games this season.

Witham drew with Great Wakering Rovers, who the Jammers lost 3-2 to last weekend, but have been beaten by Redbridge, who Maldon drew with, and Phoenix Sports, who Maldon beat.

The two clubs also have recent history in the Robert Dyas League Cup as Witham beat Maldon in the first round last year.

On that occasion, Garry faced his twin brother Alan, who was taking charge of his first game as Jammers boss, as opposing managers but Alan has since left the Park Drive club, with David Wright now taking their reins.
