MATT Sanders prevailed in a sudden-death play-off to win Braintree Golf Club’s men’s Club Championship.

Sanders saw off Callum Pipe after the pair had tied on 143, three over par.

Pipe, playing off scratch, posted a superb second-round 67 to catch one-handicap Sanders, who opened with 68.

Both parred the first two extra holes but at the third, the par-four ninth, Pipe was unable to match Sanders’ third successive par.

James Hedger was third on 145, while Scott Hudson and Jack Jordan shared fourth spot on 147. Two of Braintree’s promising youngsters competed at the English Amateur Championship, in Yorkshire.

Elliot Fullalove and Todd Clements came through the rain-hit strokeplay qualifying at The Alwoodley, near Leeds, with scores of 71 and 72 respectively.

In the matchplay, neither were involved until the second round, where Fullalove went out to boy international Marco Penge (Golf at Goodwood) at the 20th hole.

Clements also needed an extra hole to get past Banstead Downs’ Louis Hirst and then achieved the scalp of Ben Robinson (The Vale) 3&2, to reach the last 16. However, his bid to reach the quarter-finals ended at the 20th to the eventual champion, Yorkshire’s Joe Dean (Lindrick).

Braintree’s club medal was won by Trevor Green, after a card countback.

Green (11) posted a nett 69 along with runner-up David Hawes (eight) and third-placed Geoff Goodwin (12).

Meanwhile, Braintree’s seniors have bounced back well from their 7-1 home defeat by Harwich.

They won by the same score at Purdis Heath in Ipswich and then continued the good work at Maldon.

n Rajni Patel was victorious in Colne Valley’s men’s monthly stableford. He secured 40 points to claim a narrow victory over runner-up Dave Sullens, who finished a point behind.

Glenn Sibley was third, with 38 points.

Colne Valley’s ladies held the Annual Confusion Cup, with Mary Firth and Lyn White winning the event with 42 points.

Sheree Don and Lesley Knight scored 39 points to finish as runners-up, while Jean Adams and Ann Birch were third (38 points).

The team of Sue Drysdale, Frankie Salmon and Mandy Rollins won the Sandy James Trophy with 61 points.
