The annual Ladies’ Club Championship at Braintree Golf Club proved to be a game of two halves, with defending champion Toni Brockwell completing back-to-back wins.

The Championship, which incorporates the Gwen Bird 36-hole scratch, a 36-hole Handicap competition, the 27-hole Tyrell Trophy and the 18-hole Shepherd Salver, was graced with perfect conditions.

The Scratch event saw Mel Atkinson leading at lunch with a gross 84, ahead of Julie Race in second and Mary Goodwin third.

However, the afternoon round proved to be somewhat of a reversal as those who played well in the morning fell off the pace.

This left room for Brockwell to follow up a poor opening 91 with a gross 80 to win the Championship by four strokes and see her name on the trophy for the second successive year.

Anne Gisbey played her normal steady game to lift the Handicap competition with Ann Snow second, while the Tyrell Trophy went to Anita Marlborough and the Shepherd Salver to Jacqui Firmin.
