Glorious weather made for hot and dusty riding conditions for the Braintree and District Motor Cycle Club’s annual motocross at Stisted, with the 60th year of running at the Hatches Farm circuit seeing a new name on the Jack Hubbard Trophy.

Last year’s local victor, Jason Morland, only narrowly failed to hang on to his crown after Bury St Edmunds expert Ben Talbott scored two wins to his one in the fast-paced MX1 class.

The three 15 minutes plus one lap legs were punishing in the dry, dusty conditions, with a lack of rain leaving little give in the ground as riders – including the winners – fighting to keep control after hitting bumps awkwardly.

Morland led Talbott for seven laps in the first MX1 leg until, under pressure from his Suffolk rival, he slipped off course to let Talbott through to his first win.

The local man turned the tables in leg two, meaning that the final leg was a cliffhanger.

However, it went to Talbott, who led from the start to take overall victory and the Jack Hubbard Trophy.

The smaller-engine MX2 class was, for the second year running, won overall by 17-year-old Honda-mounted Shane Lock from Diss, however, Sudbury’s Craig Roper made him struggle for his success and only three points separated the two at the end.

Though failing to take the overall prize, Halstead club rider and former expert, John Hinz, made the greatest impression in the over-30s NGR group.

From a poor start in his first leg, he set out to steadily get by 13 riders to follow home ultimate group winner Timothy Clark from Diss – only to be disqualified for overtaking on a waved yellow flag covering a fallen rider.

He won his remaining legs, though, and finished runner-up overall.

The Pre–1990 Retro Machines class saw Morland find the energy to win in style The family of local scrambles and grass track ace Jack Hubbard presented the trophy in his name as well as additional prizes at the end of the day’s racing.
