The pairs match between the Kelvedon and Braintree angling clubs on waters two and three at Layer Marney resulted in a tie on points, so weight decided the winners.

This gave the verdict to Steve Mason and Jim Hannington from Derek Harper and Gary Spong, after both pairs recorded five points, with John Aves and Kevin Howell one point behind in third.

The first round of the Braintree club’s Sam Ager Evening Shield was fished on a very windswept Notley Lake, but it resulted in a very close match.

Chris Orrin was the winner with a mixed bag weighing 9-9-0, from Mark Banks with a similar catch, for a 7-8-0 total.

Round two is on Hill and Black on the Fennes.

John Daniels has drawn peg 16 on both recent Notley Friday Sweeps and run out the winner on each occasion.

First time out he had three carp, plus bits for a total of 18-6-0.

Section winners were Jim Loosley 15-6-0 and Bernard Huxter 8-2-0.

Next time out it was a close finish, as Daniels landed a small carp after the whistle to give him a winning total of 8-9-0 and Pete Thompson finished second with 8-2-0, having lost a skimmer just before the end.
