ALEX Lynn is hoping that Barcelona proves a happy hunting ground for him once more when the GP2 Series moves to the Spanish circuit this weekend.

The 21-year-old racing driver from Dunmow has good memories of the Circuit de Catalunya after taking pole position, the fastest lap and then the feature race win at the start of a season that saw him go on to become GP3 champion.

He has now moved on with the DAMS Racing team into GP2, which is seen as the main steppng stone for young drivers to progress into Formula One, but he will be hoping for a better time in Spain than he had at the season’s opening round in Bahrain last month.

Everything looked so good for Lynn in the early part of his time at the Sakhir circuit as he qualified third in his first-ever GP2 race, but a few key mistakes saw the race get away from him and he finished 19th as a damaged front wing seriously hindered his progress.

Starting the second sprint race from 19th was then tough and Lynn was only able to work his way up to 15th in the final standings as he finished the opening weekend without a point, however, he feels there was enough shown in Bahrain to be very positive going forward.

He said: “DAMS have a great record at Barcelona and have qualified there first and second for the last two years.

“We’ve got to keep our heads up and be confident. We just need to keep doing what we were at the start of the weekend in Bahrain before the mistakes were made.

“Barcelona is a circuit that suits our car and I have fond memories of the circuit having had a great start in GP3 there last year.”

GP2 practice is due to start in Spain at 10.55am (British time) on Friday, before race one starts at 2.40pm on Saturday and race two at 9.35am on Sunday.
