WITHAM Cricket Club skipper Jake Wakelin believes his high-flying side can maintain their winning ways.

The team have managed three victories from three games in this season’s Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship.

Their latest division one success was by seven wickets at Hadleigh.

Now they will be hoping to make it four when they entertain newly-promoted Halstead on Saturday.

“There’s no reason why we can’t maintain this form,” said Wakelin, who led the way with 81 against Hadleigh.

“I’m not going to make any big, bold statements about winning the league.

“But the confidence among the players is unbelievable.

“There’s a real sense of togetherness and we socialise together, as well as playing cricket together.

“We’re all pulling in the same direction and excited about what we can achieve.

“Coggeshall made a great start last season and ended up finishing second.

“I’m not saying we’re going to do that, but you definitely build momentum when you start well and develop a winning habit.”

Wakelin says their current success is the result of years of graft.

But he feels there is more strength in depth this season.

He said: “We’re over the moon with the way things are going.

“We’ve strengthened our squad and been working hard during the winter.

“But this success isn’t a coincidence.

“It hasn’t just suddenly happened.

“Five years ago most of the team were playing together in division three.

“We’ve stuck together, been promoted together and that makes it an even sweeter feeling to now be doing well.”
