Braintree's Les Ely celebrated a top-three finish at the invitation-only 73rd Goodwood Members Sopwith Cup race meeting.

Pipped to the finish line by professional racers Andy Wallace, in a MK1 Jaguar, and Richard Meins, in a Austin A40, Ely raced his 1959 MK1 Jaguar Saloon and finished just one second behind taking third place.

Ely said: “Our Jag passed scrutineering and without any pre-track testing I was pleased to negotiate some unfamiliar corners to qualify fourth on a dry Goodwood track.

“Two of the three drivers ahead of me were professionals.

“After having dropped to sixth off the line and on one occasion being pushed onto the grass, finishing third was a great result – credit to my team and to a fantastic car.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable race.

“Goodwood is a fantastic place and you couldn’t wish for better people or a better atmosphere.”

The next outing for Ely and his team will be at Donnington Park in May at the Dunlop Historic.
