A superb one-over-par round of 71 earned eight-handicapper Phill Townsend victory in the Saturday Medal at Braintree Golf Club.

His nett 63 left him five shots ahead of Tony Craven, who returned 75 off a handicap of seven.

Craven took second place on countback from Stuart Norris with a gross 89 off 21.

There was also a clear-cut winner of the Sunday Medal, with Dermot Burns carding a gross 84 off 17 handicap.

He finished four better than Craig Bowles, who also returned 84 off 13.

Just a shot behind in third place was Andrew Wiffen with 79 off seven for a nett 72.

In the seniors’ Team Crescendo, seniors captain Len Grindal, Peter Gould and Mike Collard won with 78 points.

Second on countback were Andy Little, Mike Ellis and Greg North, who edged out Phill Townsend, Terry Pinhey and Keith Lawless after both teams had 70 points.

The nearest the pin prize on the tenth hole went to Ken Rowe.

The ladies’ nine-hole Hi/Low greensome was won by Gil Barke and Helen Harding with 20 points.

They finished two ahead of Jan White and Carol Pinhey, with Mavis Ackerman and Helen Hart third with 17.
