Braintree Boxing Club’s Shane Pavitt and Joe Bryant enjoyed great success while competing in London at the Lion Club ABC Boxing Show.

Debutant Bryant made a fantastic start to his amateur career by recording a technical knockout victory over a very strong opponent, Herbert Opoku, who was representing the host club.

In an extremely fast start, Opoku attacked Bryant with a furious assault in an attempt to out-muscle him.

Undeterred, Bryant stuck to his boxing in the opening round and bravely weathered the storm, despite receiving a standing eight-count.

Opoku again fought with aggression at the beginning of the second round, but continually walked on to the quick jab of Bryant, which caused him to tire halfway through the round.

Upon sensing that his opponent’s fitness was failing him, Bryant immediately upped the tempo, turned aggressor and threw an array of punches causing the referee to issue a standing eight-count.

The fight continued into the third round, but was now being dominated by the Braintree boxer whose greater condition paid dividends and culminated in him punishing Opoku against the ropes with strong combinations of body shots and hooks.

The referee was forced to intervene and called a halt to proceedings as Bryant was declared a deserved winner. The second fight of the night involving Braintree boxers, saw the ever-improving Pavitt win a unanimous points decision against Humza Abbas after completely dominating their bout with a display of technical boxing that had his opponent completely befuddled.

Pavitt’s great performance was recognised at the end of the night when he was voted as the Outstanding Away Boxer of the evening and presented with his trophy in front of an applauding crowd.

This was a great achievement for Pavitt and for Braintree Boxing Club, especially in the London area which is renowned for the high level of their boxers.
