There was last-gasp frustration for Witham Town on the south coast as they saw three Ryman League premier division points become just one in stoppage-time at Lewes.

Garry Kimble’s team had been leading 2-1 heading into the final exchanges at the Dripping Pan, but were unable to see out time unscathed as they conceded an equaliser in the 93rd minute.

It was to prove costly for Witham as they saw two valuable points slip away to another side sitting towards the foot of the table.

Hosts Lewes started the day one place below Witham in the premier division table with both looking for points to move themselves away from the relegation battle.

And for the vast majority of the game, it looked as if Witham would be the ones who emerged the happier.

They took the lead in the first half when Luke Callander scored in the 42nd minute and centre-half Josh Banton, who has joined Witham from Southend United, put them two-up in the 57th minute with a goal on his Town debut.

It gave the visitors a cushion, but they saw that eroded as Lewes pushed forward and got a goal back with seven minutes remaining as Luke Blewden found the target.

And that wasn’t the end of it as the hosts kept pressing and eventually found their leveller in the third minute of stoppage time as Nathan Crabbe scored to make it 2-2 at the close.

The result was Witham’s seventh league draw of the season.
