Alex Lynn was unable to celebrate his new-found status as 2014 GP3 Series champion with a podium finish as he ended the feature race in fifth position in Abu Dhabi.

The 21-year-old from Dunmow was crowned as champion yesterday after his only remaining title rival, Dean Stoneman, failed to claim the points he needed to keep his challenge going in qualifying.

Lynn, who is a member of the Red Bull Junior Programme and races for Carlin in GP3, started the feature race at the Yas Marina circuit in fourth spot on the grid, but lost a place early on after running wide and was unable to reclaim it during the remainder of the 14-lap event.

It meant he celebrated his title with a top-five place at the end, while Stoneman kept his own push for a second-place finish in the championship going with victory in the feature race.

The concluding race of the 2014 GP3 Series will be tomorrow at Yas Marina at 9am (British time).
