Alex Lynn will start today’s GP3 Series feature race in pole position at the Red Bull Ring in Austria after another dominant display in qualifying.

Just as he did in the championship’s first meeting in Barcelona last month – when he went on to secure the race victory – the 20-year-old racing driver from Dunmow nailed a flying lap to qualify first on the grid.

The Carlin driver time was 0.023 seconds ahead of ART Grand Prix’s Alex Fontana with Dean Stoneman of Marussia Manor Racing taking third.

However, Stoneman was subsequently handed a three-place penalty for gaining an unfair advantage during his fastest lap.

That won’t concern Lynn, though, as he looks to once again impress watching Red Bull bosses.

He is a member of the Red Bull Junior Programme and is looking for a good show at the team’s home circuit in Spielberg, so was delighted to get pole, but admitted it hadn’t been straightforward.

He said: It was a lot more difficult than I would have liked.

“I think I left my run – my pole lap – a bit too late.

“The traffic was quite difficult; it wasn’t the best lap I could have done.

“The tyres were starting to go away and I didn’t think I was going to have the chance to take pole because I missed the windows on the tyres but thankfully they stayed in enough to just take it away.”

The feature race is due to start in Austria at 4.20pm (British time) today.
