Race two of the opening weekend of the GP3 Series proved more tricky than the first for Dunmow’s Alex Lynn, but the Essex racing driver ended the first round sitting first in the championship standings.

Having achieved the Grand Chelem of claiming pole position, driving the fastest lap and winning after leading ever lap in the opening race yesterday, Lynn wasn’t able to dominate the second at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

After the previous day’s win, he was handed a grid position of eighth, but got crowded out in the opening corner and slipped backwards.

With the track slippery and grip at a premium due to earlier rain, Lynn took a gamble to change to wet tyres during a safety car period to try to claw back some advantage.

However, the gamble didn’t pay off and he lost further places as the track began to dry and ended the race in 18th.

Lynn told his Twitter account: “Shame about race two, the aim was obviously to score points!

“But to lead the championship from the first weekend is great.”

The next round of the series will be at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on June 21.
