Witham Hockey Club’s men have completed the job they started and have been crowned champions of East League division three south east.

Witham made sure of their promotion the previous week, but a 5-2 win against second-placed Saffron Walden seconds – with James Suett scoring all five goals – made sure they would be going up as title-holders.

And first-team captain Richard Marshall has paid tribute to the work his team have done this year in returning them to division two in style.

He said: “We didn’t know what to expect from the league when we started the season as you can sometimes have up and coming sides who can make it hard.

“But the fact that we’ve had such a good team ethic has made it easy.

"We’ve all been singing from the same songsheet and some of the performances have been exceptional."
