5:27pm Saturday 26th October 2013 in Sport
BRAINTREE Town marched on in the FA Cup despite a late comeback from Weymouth.
The Iron won their fourth qualifying round match 2-1 at Weymouth and were in control for the majority of the game.
They set themselves up for the win with a goal in the fifth minute.
Matt Paine fired in to the bottom left corner of goal from 20 yards to open the scoring.
Luke Burbidge then fired wide from 18 yards for Weymouth.
Daniel Holman then had good chance saved by home keeper Jason Matthews on 12 minutes.
Weymouth then went straight up to the other end and Burbidge got on the end of a great cross from Barry McConnell but his sliding effort went straight at Nathan McDonald in the Braintree goal.
But it was the visitors who doubled their advantage on 15 minutes with Sean Marks’ diving header.
Just before half-time Holman had another chance to increase Braintree’s lead but his shot went wide.
And it was Holman who went close again in first-half injury-time when his deflected shot was pushed on to the post by Matthews, who then reacted well to block the rebound.
After the break, Braintree were in command and Weymouth offered very little threat.
The visitors went close again with 15 minutes to go when Mulley hit the outside of the post.
The match then sprang back into life in the dying minutes when Weymouth pulled a goal back after Sam Poole headed in from a corner.
Weymouth then put intense pressure on the Braintree goal firing balls into the box.
However, Braintree’s defence held out for a deserved win.
