Witham Town held their nerve in a penalty shootout to book their place in the third round of the Robert Dyas League Cup.
Town bounced back from the disappointment of conceding a late goal in normal time to beat their Ryman League premier division hosts, Wingate and Finchley, on spot-kicks.
Witham, of Ryman One North, had matched the higher-placed side throughout the game and were worthy of their eventual win.
Both teams missed early chances with Dean Green and former Torquay United and Southend midfielder George Artemi, who has signed for Witham from Canvey Island, going close for the visitors.
Wingate also had shots on goal but those on target were well saved by Witham keeper Danny Sambridge.
The well-matched contest continued after half-time.
Witham stayed looking dangerous on the break as Green struck the post and they took the lead in the 85th minute when a free-kick by James Stevens was spilled by home keeper Cain Davies and Danny Lopes was on hand to fire in the loose ball.
However, the lead didn’t last long as the Blues equalised three minutes later as the Witham defence failed to clear their lines.
David Laird scored from close range to sent the tie to a penalty shootout, but Witham bounced back well to win 5-3, with Stevens, Kris Newby, Rob Whitnell, Lopes and Sambridge firing home from the spot.
