Welling bring an end to Braintree's winning run
BRAINTREE TOWN 2 WELLING UNITED 3
After four back-to-back Skrill Premier victories, Braintree Town saw their winning run ended at home by Welling United.
In the end, it was a disappointing conclusion to what had been a very good sequence, but Welling were good value for their three points.
The recent records of both teams suggested this would be a tight encounter and that was how it turned out, with clear-cut chances at a premium.
Braintree had made just one change from their 3-0 win at Hyde the previous weekend, with Jordan Cox given his first Iron start in place of the injured Sean Marks.
It was the Iron who made the early running and they went ahead after 27 minutes when Charlie Strutton steered home Sam Habergham’s cross from the left.
Welling appealed that Strutton had been offside, but the referee was unmoved.
However, the visitors were quickly back on level terms when player/manager James Day slammed home a free-kick around the Braintree wall from the edge of the box.
That was how it stayed until half-time, but it was Welling who got their noses in front after the break.
It stayed tight, but Welling twice took advantage of some poor defending by the hosts with goals by Lee Clarke and Alex Dyer to take a 3-1 lead.
Braintree rallied at the end and Cox pulled one back in the 89th minute as they threw men forward, but an equaliser just wouldn’t come.
