Witham want to make it tough for Hemel Hempstead in FA Cup replay
Witham Town manager Garry Kimble wants his players to make Hemel Hempstead pay for not putting their FA Cup second qualifying round tie to bed at the first time of asking.
Kimble admitted that the Calor Southern League premier division leaders had the better of the play early in their game in Hertfordshire on Saturday, but he felt his players deserved all the credit for battling back.
And with a home tie against Dulwich Hamlet to fight for in the third qualifying round, Kimble wants his team to finish the job when they meet in the replay at the Village Glass Stadium in Witham tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).
Kimble said: “We stuck to our task well on Saturday and I know they won’t fancy spending an hour and a half on a coach to come to our place on a Tuesday night “People wouldn’t have given us a chance before the game, but it was nice to least get them back to our place so we could have another go.
“Anything is possible in the cup.
“They know they should have been two or three up by the time we scored on Saturday and they didn’t put them away, so we get another crack at it.
“They are the best side we have played.
“Their passing was good and they moved the ball quickly, so we need to make sure we get tighter to them.
“We saw on Saturday that if we allow them to play, they’ll crucify us.
“But we have nothing to lose and have a big carrot dangling in front of us with a home tie against Dulwich Hamlet to play for.
“I’m sure Hemel will feel they weren’t at their best, but full credit needs to go to my boys for what they did.
“They stuck to their task, they stifled them and kept their chances out and I think my player deserves the credit for that rather than them not playing to their max.”
Lewis Godbold will be back from suspension for Witham tonight, but Kris Newby is banned after totting up five bookings and Sam Taylor may miss out with a back injury.
