Mist ends Witham's night at Maldon
Thick mist during the second half of their Ryman League division one north game at Park Drove brought a premature end to the game between Witham Town and Maldon and Tiptree.
The hosts were leading 1-0 at the time thanks to Joe Gardener's 24th minute goal but with visibility diminishing the referee called a halt to the game.
It had been all Witham early on with home keeper Adam Seals having to make a string of saves to deny the visitors.
Tom Wraight and Seb Murfet both saw shots stay out, while Kris Newby really should have done better with a header when placed almost underneath the Maldon crossbar at a corner.
And they paid for their lack of finishing in the 24th minute as Maldon started to see more of the ball.
But it took a wonderful bit of skill to break the deadlock and it was provided by Gardener.
His scintillating run sliced open the Witham defence and he capped it with a low driven shot that beat Town keeper Danny Sambridge.
The game became very open from then on until half-time but neither side could find the target and as the weather detoriated after the break it became clear that the game would not reach a conclusion.
The referee finally decided enough was enough in the 65th minute.
