FA Cup first qualifying round replay
Witham Town won the right to play Hemel Hempstead Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup, but they didn’t have it easy at Mildenhall Town.
The hosts fought hard to the end, but being reduced to ten men for a long spell made it tough for them.
As in recent games, Witham’s finishing was poor and they should have won more convincingly with the number of chances they created.
Witham started well with Sam taylor making many strong runs but his crosses and the occasional shot at goal were wild and went astray.
Then against the run of play, Mildenhall took the lead in the 16th minute after a clearance out of defence and a quick break.
Alex Steed scored for the hosts as he shot under the diving Jason Baker, who was keeping goal in place of the ill Danny Sambridge.
However, WItham equalised after lots of pressure when a fierce shot by Kris Newby went through the legs of the unfortunate home keeper Josh Pope.
Mildenhall’s Steve Holderthen received a red card following a skirmish and soon after half-time, Rob Whitnell put Witham ahead for the first time in the tie as he headed home from a corner.
The ten men of the home side never gave up, though, and always looked dangerous on the break.
In the 64th minute, Danny Emmanuel assured Witham’s progress, though, when he capped a fine performance by heading in a simple chance after Scott Pethers’ cross went just over the keeper.
Witham: Jason Baker, Scott Pethers, Seb Murfet, Tom Devaux, Paul King, James Stevens, Sam Taylor, Kris Newby, Rob Whitnell (Usama Hamden 76), John Watson (Danny Lopes 63), Danny Emmauel. Subs not used: Jamar Dobson, Paul White, Steve Good, Danny Sambridge. Man-of-the-match: Danny Emmanuel.
