Iron and Rovers share a point
Braintree Town had to settle for a point against one of the Skrill Premier's title favourites as they drew 1-1 with Forest Green Rovers at the Amlin Stadium.
Forest Green had been sent packing on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline last season, but they made an encouraging start this time.
They went ahead when Yan Klukowski’s free-kick was allowed to find a way through the whole defence and past the unsighted Nathan McDonald in the home goal with just six minutes gone.
McDonald then had to be alert to deny Forest Green striker James Norwood soon after, but the Iron gradually worked their way into the game and had they had some good chances to draw level.
Liam Enver-Marum and Sean Marks both went close and thought they had won a penalty when James Mulley appeared to be hauled down in the box.
Referee Amy Fearn wasn’t impressed with that call, but she did award a spot-kick just before half-time.
Visiting defender Chris Stokes had blocked Luke Daley’s shot with his arm and Braintree skipper Kenny Davis stepped up to fire home from the penalty spot.
And they almost took a deserved lead into the break, but Forest Green keeper Sam Russell somehow kept out Matt Paine’s forceful header.
In the second-half, both sides had chances to go ahead, with Braintree ending the game strongly, but they had to settle for a point.
