FA Cup preliminary round replay
AN indomitable performance by all of the Witham team saw them progress into the first qualifying round of the FA Cup.
They had to dig deep and play with just ten men for 60 minutes of the game after their inspirational captain, Lewis Godbold, was controversially sent off on the half-hour mark.
The home team started strongly and the first few minutes saw Danny Sambridge having to make a couple of saves and Brad Stopher clearing the ball off the line.
However, Witham took the lead in the 12th minute when Jamar Dobson rose and headed in a corner by Tom Wraight and they then started to create chances.
Then came the sending off of Godbold, but Witham went further ahead in the 37th minute when Dobson got the last touch following a scramble at a corner.
They should have had a third when Danny Emmanuel made a great run round the home defence, but he mis-kicked his shot with the goal at his mercy.
Throughout the second half, Witham had to defend and did so with lots of skill and determination.
Everyone was a hero, but they did have one slice of luck when the Jockeys were awarded a penalty, but Ed Curtis struck his spot-kick against the post.
Eventually – after what seemed like hours to the travelling supporters – the final whistle was blown and Witham were through to meet Mildenhall in the next round on September 14.
