Braintree will have to find clinical edge early

Braintree Town will be looking to find their clinical edge in front of goal from the first whistle as AFC Telford United visit the Amlin Stadium tomorrow.

With the two clubs sat towards the foot of the Blue Square Bet Premier table, it could prove to be a valuable three points for whoever can take them, but Iron boss Alan Devonshire feels his team need to make a strong start after losing 3-0 to Macclesfield in the week.

He said: “It’s going to be a big game, but they all are.

“We need to have cup final performances in every game.

“We started well against Macclesfield, but it seems as if we need to score first to get anything.

“Maybe it is the confidence it gives us that makes the difference?”

Devonshire said he expected left-back Sam Habergham to return after two games out with a dead leg, but Brad Quinton (knee) and keeper Danny Naisbitt (ankle) are both set to be out for a few weeks.

Meanwhile, Devonshire admits he has been left confused by the Iron’s up and down recent form about how much business he needs to do in the January transfer window.

He added: “You look to bring players in thinking where you need to strengthen and then see how good the performance at Tamworth was last Saturday.

“You think there isn’t a lot wrong, but after the Macclesfield game you’re left thinking that you want half a dozen to come in.

“I seem to be scratching my head all the time at the moment.”

“We can only afford a certain type of player anyway and you can’t keep going and grabbing players from lower leagues.

“They won’t make that much of a difference so I’ll have to wait and see and perhaps have a chat with the chairman.”
