Devonshire embarrassed by Iron's woeful Trophy display
Braintree Town manager Alan admitted he was embarrassed of his team's first-half performance against Havant and Waterlooville as they crashed out of the FA Trophy with a 2-1 first round defeat.
The Blue Square Bet South side outplayed their hosts in all departments during the opening 45 minutes and led 2-0 at the break.
Christian Nanetti's powerful penalty strike and a headed goal by Stefan Bailey gave Havant the advantage and it eventually proved to be enough as Braintree weren't able to stage enough of a comeback in the second half to overturn the deficit.
The Iron were better after some harsh words by Devonshire in the dressing room and much of the second-half action was played out in the visitors' area.
A Sean Marks goal did halve the deficit and Braintree went looking for an equaliser, but the early damage had been done and they crashed out of the competition when they were unable to penetrate further.
Devonshire said: "It was a disastrous first 45 minutes and I was embarrassed of it.
"I can only apologise to the fans of this football club for it and it was the first time that I've really lost my temper with the players at half-time.
"I'm not making any excuses for it, because you need heart and passion in this game, but that wasn't good enough."
To make a miserable night even worse for Braintree, they slipped two places to the very bottom of the Blue Square Bet Premier table after other teams around them picked up points in league action elsewhere.
