Braintree Town manager Alan Devonshire has added a striker to his squad ahead of the closure of the loan window on Thursday afternoon.

The Iron boss has brought in Don Cowan on a short-term deal from League One club Stevenage and, with the fitness of Sean Marks still a doubt for the weekend, the new addition will be eligible for Saturday's FA Trophy game against Havant and Waterlooville at the Amlin Stadium.

Cowan, who is 23, started his career with Shamrock Rovers and Longford Town in Ireland before signing for Stevenage in August 2011.

He made his first-team debut against Tranmere Rovers last December and has since made nine appearances for Stevenage.

After picking up a fractured ankle last season, Cowan has been working hard this season to regain full fitness and will hope to build his fitness further with the Iron.

Devonshire had seen earlier loan deals for a striker and a defender fall through after the players involved were unable to agree terms.

Cowan was the striker who had initially turned down the move but eventually opted to come to the Amlin Stadium to play for the Iron.

However, Devonshire was unable to seal the move for the defender that he wanted to bring in ahead of the deadline on Thursday.
