SOHAM TOWN RANGERS 0 WITHAM TOWN 1
Ryman League division one north

WITHAM put some sketchy form on the road behind them to win only their second Ryman League division one north fixture of the campaign away from Spa Road.

In fact, this game at Soham was Witham’s best performance of the season and the winning margin could have been more convincing.

However, once again they met a goalkeeper in top form, who kept them at bay with some good saves.

In the opening minutes, Emeka Onwubiko had a shot at goal but it was deflected wide when a goal looked certain.

Dan Bircham, the home keeper, made a good stop from Sam Taylor and then he was fortunate when the ball hit him at the foot of the post after Rob Whitnell had headed on a long Scott Pethers throw in.

Paul White hit the post with a 30-yard effort just before half-time as it somehow remained goalless at the break.

In the early stages of the second half, Rangers fought back but Witham soon regained the upper hand and were playing well, with good, robust and skilful football.

Taylor was unlucky when Bircham stuck a foot out to save his shot and the Soham keeper then tipped a shot from Onwubiko over the bar.

However, from the resulting corner, Whitnell powerfully headed in.

It was a goal that had been threatening for all the second half as Witham had dominated it and the visitors’ own keeper, Danny Sambridge, didn’t have a save to make throughout as his defence was also in top form.

Witham will now look to extend their winning run to three games when they entertain Potters Bar Town at Spa Road on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Witham: Danny Sambridge, Scott Pethers, Seb Murfet, Rob Whitnell, Tom Devaux, Paul White, Sam Taylor, James Stevens, Emeka Onwubiko (Shamir Mullins), Lewis Godbold, Danny Lopez. Subs not used: Danny Emmanuel, Billy Hunt. Man-of-the-match: Lewis Godbold.
