Hands off open spaces

All open spaces within the town envelope must be regarded as “green spaces” and need to be given a value which is beyond that understood by the accountant mentality we so often are the victims of.

The open space behind Churchill Road, Braintree, is highly valued and well used by various sporting organisations, together with those who walk dogs. The adjoining area with its BMX track is well used throughout the year. It is so satisfying to see youngsters enjoying an outdoor interest.

This open green space, like so many others, could be developed to attract wildlife and create a feeling of parkland rather than a featureless field. Green spaces are priceless and, when lost, will never be replaced.

It would be easy to suggest alternatives, but each green space has a high value to those who live nearby.

I am certain all those who live near the Discovery Centre and Adventure Circuit would be horrified at losing this open space to housing. In this sense, all residents should strongly oppose the development of all established “green spaces” within the town envelope.

Our town planners are there to serve us and not to make decisions the majority oppose.

We need to be reminded that to know “the price of everything and the value of nothing” will leave us all so much poorer.

We can only use what is presently available: a letter of protest to the head of planning and the chief executive, making certain that as many elected councillors as possible are made aware of our feelings.
