Fears over country park
|
| Concerned: Olivia and Theo Holmes. |
AN environmentalist has said he fears the Braintree Town stadium and housing proposals "will probably have a detrimental effect" on a country park if given the go-ahead.
Pete Lane, treasurer of the Friends of the Flitch Way charity, said his personal view as a member of the group was the plans would mean development right to the boundary of the picturesque Flitch Way - which passes through Braintree and Rayne - reducing available habitats for wildlife.
He said: "As yet the Friends of the Flitch Way have not come up with a statement which represents the views of the group, but having said that obviously everyone is concerned with the integrity of the Flitch Way.
"From the plans, I cannot see how they have any way in which they can affect the Flitch Way directly, but it's moving development up right to the boundary which will probably have a detrimental impact."
Mr Lane said the wildlife at the linear country park, along the old railway line, was "quite profuse," with butterflies, birds and lots of mammals, including badgers, and possibly great crested newts.
Meanwhile, two young environment lovers have written to the Times expressing their concerns over the possible loss of green space around the Flitch Way.
Theo Holmes, five, wrote: "Flitch Way and the fields all around it is my favourite place for bike rides. I go walking down Flitch Way and collecting sticks every weekend, if they build on this area I will cry and ask my Mum and Dad to move away from Braintree."
His sister Olivia, eight, who attends St Michael's Primary School in Braintree with him, said: "I have been going to Flitch Way since I was two years old. It is where I ride my bike and where I have learned all about wildlife and plants."
Their father Elliot Holmes, 38, a group administrator manager who lives in Clare Road, Braintree, with his family, said his children were "not devastated" by the proposed development, but were upset over it.

With regard to Mr Lane's comments about the plans - I understand that the pedestrian access to the stadium (and no doubt the community pitch) will be via the Flitch Way. I think that will have a definite adverse impact!

J, I agree. It would be terrible if more people from the town started to walk up and down the Flitch Way. Can you imagine - more people would get to enjoy it and that would be terrible. I think they should close it and retain it just for your personal use. It's about time folk in Braintree realised that the Flitch Way is not for everyone, just a select few.

I don't think you quite understand. I do not believe that people walking along the Flitch Way to the football stadium would really be doing so to enjoy the country park. I think that your sarcasm is misplaced. I have enjoyed the Flitch way, along with countless others, for many years and hope to continue doing so. If you haven't got anything constructive to say please keep your comments to yourself. Thank you.

How is covering the surrounding fields in concrete and having 100s of football fans appropriating the paths conducive to that.
How will the wildlife flourish in the changed environment - unless you're including vermin of course.

The main reason for him selling.

The main reason for selling is being offered a lot of money.

All he has said is that the proposals will have an undeniable detrimental affect on the wildlife.
Some people care about that.

It appears sarcasm has more comment pulling power than the effects of a 6000 seat football stadium and an influx of 500 houses has on the area. If you really have a
care
for your home town why not air them properly? If you do no want to air them personally, then send your comments to someone who is on
our
side. Over these years they have supported, advised, encouraged and still stand to stimulate Braintree towards the preservation, development and improvement. Send your comments to braintreebcs@aol.com
