BRAINTREE Town Football Club are launching a petition to get support for their new stadium plans down on paper.

Gordon Humphris, chairman of the supporters' club, who is organising the petition, will kick-start it at the Iron's home match on Saturday by pushing for signatures at the stadium turnstiles, the club shop and bar.

He said the petition would also be taken out around Braintree district to wherever Iron supporters lived.

Mr Humphris, who is hoping for some 800 to 900 names as a start, said: "We are not going to get into the housing development side of it, but ask the question will you back a new stadium on the edge of town?'"

Lee Harding, club chairman, said while remaining respectful of the people who opposed the planned relocation, it was important to galvanise and co-ordinate support for the plans.

In his programme notes, he said: "It would be a shame if, after all our efforts, our plans did not get the go-ahead because the silent majority were not given the opportunity to demonstrate their support."

Mr Harding added: "This is a good club, well run and one that has sensible and, I believe, achievable ambitions.

"It is proud to represent Braintree and, in my opinion, deserves to have the support of Braintree.

"If you agree with me, spread the word so we all get the support this fine 110-year-old club deserves."

Arch, Braintree says...

Mr Humphris, who is hoping for some 800 to 900 names as a start, said: "We are not going to get into the housing development side of it, but ask the question will you back a new stadium on the edge of town?'"

So people are signing a petition without knowing that the stadium the club are actually petitioning for, requires the destruction of the greenbelt between Rayne and Braintree and the building of 600 houses too to finance it.

That's a convenient omission from the petition.
