A THUG who carried out a horrific axe attack and an armed robbery hours later has been jailed for eight years.

Jamie Sherfield, 34, inflicted serious injuries on the victim in his own home and even filmed the aftermath of the attack on his mobile phone before he went on to carry out a robbery at a shop nearby.

Sherfield, of York Road, Southend, received four years for robbery and four years for grievous bodily harm to run consecutively when he appeared at Basildon Crown Court last Thursday.

Det Con Simon Laurie, of Southend CID, said: “Sherfield carried out a targeted attack on the victim in his own home.

“He inflicted serious wounds using a dangerous weapon and even filmed the aftermath of the attack.

“Within the same day, he carried out a brazen robbery in a shop full of customers and staff while armed with knife.

“Sherfield is a dangerous individual who has now been sent to prison for many years.”

On Saturday, February 3, a man was attacked inside his home in Princes Street by Sherfield at around 1.10am.

He was struck in the hand, head, chest and knee with an axe, causing him to suffer serious injuries.

The victim managed to escape before flagging down a passing police officer.

He was taken to hospital where he received treatment for his injuries.

The same day, Sherfield walked into Savers in Hamlet Court Road at 2pm.

He threatened staff and customers with a knife.

He then left with hundreds of pounds in cash after he was chased out of the store by staff and customers.

A shop worker from the area who asked to remain anonymous told the Echo at the time of the attack: “I heard about it from customers who were in the shop at the time.

“They said he kept apologising and saying it was to feed his kids.”

Sherfield was arrested by police officers the following day and charged with robbery and wounding with intent two days later.

Police also arrested and charged Kerry Brown, 32, of Preston Road, Westcliff, with wounding with intent in connection to the axe attack.

She denied being involved and stood trial at Basildon Crown Court.

After a five-day trial, a jury found her not guilty of grievous bodily harm.
