Samuel Pepys, kept his famous diary between 1660 & 1669.
He visited Thurrock twice during this period.
On September 24 1665 he “Waked and up and drank, and then to discourse; and then being about Grayes, and a very calme, curious morning, we took our wherry, and to the fisherman, and bought a great deal of fish, and to Gravesend to Whites, and had part of it dressed”.
On another occasion, he drank at a small alehouse close to Tilbury Fort. This would have been on or close to the site of the current World’s End pub, Previously known as the Ferry House and then the Lamb, it has been the World’s End since 1667.
It is rumoured that after Pepy’s visit he was heard to say this place is like the end of the world hence the name change which it has had ever since.
