An Essex police officer has been given management advice following a misconduct hearing held at Chelmsford Civic Centre between July 16 and July 20.

PC John Senior denied breaching the standards of professional behaviour relating to authority, respect, courtesy and use of force.

The panel, led by legally qualified chair Mrs Alexandra Robson, ruled that on November 1 2016, PC Senior used reasonable force when he became involved in an altercation with a man who was under his observation whilst in police custody and he was exonerated on this matter.

However the panel found he did breach standards of professional behaviour in relation to authority, respect and courtesy by using inappropriate language.

Chief Superintendent Carl O’Malley, who was sitting on the hearing panel said: “Essex Police fully supports officers who use reasonable force in carrying out their duties to prevent harm to themselves, their colleagues or members of the public - this force must be justified and proportionate.

“In this case PC Senior was exonerated in his use of reasonable and proportionate force to protect himself and others.

“However, the force will not tolerate police officers using abusive language towards members of the public even in circumstances of extreme distress or provocation and for this reason PC Senior will receive management advice.”
