A demonstration was held to rally against US president Donald Trump on Friday.

Demonstrators congregated in Southend high street at the same time as thousands protested in central London.

The rallies coincided with the controversial first visit of Donald Trump to the UK and represented the protest against the American leader’s policies on issues ranging from immigration and race relations to women and climate change.

Samantha Reed, chair of the Rayleigh and Wickford Constituency Labour Party, said: “I was pleased to attend the Southend Stop Trump Peaceful Protest with my son.

“Many parents were there to show solidarity to those affected by Tump’s current tyrannical immigration policy ripping families apart.”

Essex Police’s Inspector for Southend Ian Hughes said: “The protest in the town centre went smoothly.

“Engaging with the community is a key piece of our day-to-day work.

“Thanks to the Southend Street Pastors for joining the partnership approach to make sure everyone has their say.”
