A MAN was rushed to hospital after being trapped under a car that hit him.

Emergency services including fire crews, ambulances, and police attended the incident in Badger Hall Avenue, Benfleet, at about 11am on Friday.

The air ambulance from Essex and Herts Air Ambulance was also called to the scene, and landed in fields near to The King John’s School.

The man, believed to be in his 70s, was rushed to hospital by land ambulance after the incident.

He was taken to Southend Hospital with head injuries.

Residents rushed out into the street to help and to rescue the man, including Martin Rouse, 56, of Badger Hall Avenue.

He said: “I saw a car rolling back and heard loud voices.

“I saw the car and realised something was very wrong and thought I would help do something about it.

“I went out and stood behind the car with my neighbour to push it forwards.

“I saw the man had a cut to his head and he was under the car.

“I was stood behind one of the rear wheels where the man’s feet were sticking out.

“We were trying to stop the car going any further backwards.”

When the professionals such as the ambulance crews arrived, Mr Rouse left the area and went back inside the house to avoid getting in the way.

Mr Rouse said it was quite a shock and not the sort of think you see everyday.

He said: “The ambulance crew arrived at the scene very quickly.”

Another resident living nearby said his wife was in shock after witnessing the incident.

He also heard and saw the air ambulance land at a nearby school field.

A mum-of-two living nearby spoke of her shock at the incident.

She said: “I was in my house when I suddenly saw all the emergency services in the road.

“I rushed out to see what was going on and saw the men under the car.

“It must have been so scary for those involved.

“It sounds so awful.

“There were load of people standing around and talking about what was going on.”

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said: “A man, believed to be in his 70s, was assessed and treated at the scene for a head injury. The patient was taken to Southend Hospital.”
