A NEW initiative that uses child-size cut outs is aimed at parents to stop them parking dangerously outside a school.

Parking around Grovewood Primary School, Grove Road, Rayleigh, has long been a concern for residents, teachers and children - and it is also a concern for neighbours.

The small bollards are put on the double yellow lines in the roads around the school to encourage people to find elsewhere to park.

There are concerns the dangerous parking could put children at risk when they want to cross the road.

The idea came from the school council, led by headteacher Richard Green, who wrote to the school community and homeowners to gauge their opinions.

Mr Green said: “Like most schools in the country, we are concerned by the risk posed by inconsiderate and dangerous parking.

“The school council shares these concerns and has shown a determination to try and improve it.

“We are hopeful that these signs might help us to address some of the parking issues with the cooperation of parents.”

Residents and parents took to social media to praise the initiative, which is already in effect in other schools as well.

Charlotte Kalaydjian said: “This is such a brilliant idea.

“Well done Grove Wood.

“Road safety is always a priority for the safety of our children.”

Julie Negus added: “Edward Frances Primary has had them for a couple of years now.

“They are a really good idea.

“They have been run over a couple of times, but they definitely help.”
