A COUNCIL has claimed there are no problems with a set of traffic lights which are being blamed for long queues.

Drivers are reporting the traffic lights on High Street, South Benfleet, just past the Hoy and Helmet Pub, are far too reactive.

Motorists report the lights are turning red instantly after pedestrians are pressing the button.

As a result, drivers say only two or three cars get through the lights before they turn red again.

Seconds later the button is pressed and the cycle repeats.

It is claimed this is exasperating traffic issues on High Road, and Canvey residents have suggested it is causing huge problems for those commuting to South Benfleet.

Among the problems are the number of drivers queuing all the way from Canvey Road as they come off the island and the delays this is causing to journeys.

Numerous complaints led to Essex County Council officers visiting the site yesterday to find out if there was a fault.

A spokesman from Essex Highways said: “Engineers have checked all the vehicle-activated detectors and wiring loops on this crossing and everything seems to be working normally and safely.

“There are issues caused by the proximity of the crossing to the roundabout, but the crossing signals are programmed to deal safely with that.

“We are continuing to monitor, both remotely and on site, the operation of the lights here and if needed we will take appropriate action.”

Canvey residents working in South Benfleet took to Facebook with a large thread of comments over the last two days, bemoaning the traffic, causing issues as residents attempt to get off and on the island during rush hour - particularly in the morning.

The initial post to the Canvey Island Then and Now Facebook page, boasting more than 20,000 members, stated: “Despite me and a few other people reporting it still nothing has been done and it would be so easily remedied.

“The lights are changing to red immediately when pedestrians press the button regardless of whether they have only just turned green.

“I think the priority has changed at some point over the last month or so as the traffic has been so much worse than usual and is completely clear after the crossing.”
