THIEVES have raided a post office and stole two full bags of mail, but left the shop’s stock untouched.

The break-in took place at the Post Office branch in Eastwood Boulevard, Westcliff, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The shop also sells items like cigarettes and groceries, but the gang only seemed interested in the letters and parcels.

Former Southend councillor and Westcliff resident Jim Clinkscales said it has caused a great level of concern among the local community.

He added: “We don’t know how many people were involved, but it seems like it was a pretty amateur smash and grab job. Why they targeted the mail I don’t know.

“They left the cigarettes and things like that but just took the post. They could’ve targeted more valuable items.

“It’s a great worry to us all.

“I wanted the appeal to go out because local media plays such an important role in tracking this people down. I hope the police can find them before they target anywhere else.”

Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, fears it may not be as amateur as it seems.

The woman, who lives in Fairfax Drive and uses the branch regularly, added: “If they’ve stolen people’s mail surely they could have sensitive documents in there.

“If someone has applied for a credit card for example, they could have included enough for someone to steal their identity.

“There must be a reason they decided to steal the mail - they can’t have just been hoping for birthday card money.”

The Post Office did not respond to a request for comment.

A spokesman for the police said: “We are investigating a burglary which happened at the Post Office, Eastwood Boulevard.

“It is believed entry was forced to the property just before 5am, by three people seen smashing a window. Two large bags were taken. Enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone with information should contact PC Luke Stacey at Southend on 101.”
