Allegations of historical sex abuse have been made against a teacher who worked at a primary school for decades.

Five people have come forward to complain that they were abused in the 1980s by class teacher John Evans at Whitmore Way Junior School in Basildon.

It is understood Mr Evans, who is now deceased, taught at other schools including the Vange School, in London Road, Basildon.

Solicitor Katherine Yates, of Andrew Grove & Co, said: “This firm represents several former pupils of Whitmore Way Junior School who alleged that they were sexually and/or physically abused by the late Mr Evans.

“The alleged abuse has left a legacy of health problems for the survivors and it is only right that we make enquiries on their behalf to try and ascertain what happened.

“We have received specific allegations about so called “birthday washes” that took place at the sink in a corner of Mr Evans’ classroom.

“I am appealing for information from anyone who was in Mr Evans’ class who remembers the “birthday washes” or any other incidents involving him to please contact me.

“I would like to reassure any parents of children who presently attend the schools that these are historical allegations and are not connected with the present day staff or pupils of the schools.”

A spokesperson for Essex County Council said: “We are aware of historical abuse claims in relation to Whitmore Primary School, following contact with the Local Authority Designated Officer team. The matter has been referred to the police as any allegations of this nature would be.”
Essex Police confirmed the matter was investigated until Mr Evans’ death.

A spokesman said: “In May 2001 Essex Police concluded an investigation into sexual abuse relating to a former teacher from Basildon. The suspect was arrested in connection with abuse reportedly committed in the 1980s. After investigation, no further action was taken due to insufficient evidence.

“We were contacted with further information in August 2015 and the case was re-investigated. During those enquiries, it was established the suspect had died in 2012 and no further action was taken.

“We urge victims of child sexual abuse to report it us. A thorough investigation will be launched, no matter how long ago the abuse may have taken place. When allegations are reported, it enables police to assess whether there are current safeguarding risks and ensure appropriate action is taken.”

The law firm is considering bringing suit against Essex County Council as the education authority.
