This week in Down Memory Lane, we take a look at the Orsett workhouse and Piggs Bakery in times gone by.

In the first picture is the Orsett workhouse, where the poor of Thurrock would have gone on hard times.

We now know this building as Orsett Hospital, which it became in the 1960s.

The second picture is of a well-known company called Piggs Bakery. This photo was taken almost 100 years ago in 1920.

It shows a mixture of horse-drawn vehicles and two new motor-driven vans The bakery was next to the Whitmore arms until it moved in 1933 to Blackshots at the junction of Lodge Lane and Southend Road known as Piggs Corner.

The third picture shows the building after it closed, looking a sorry state.

It has since been converted into a nursing home for the elderly.
