The roof at the entrance to a bank has collapsed, injuring an elderly woman.
The large quantity of roofing material fell outside the HSBC in Town Square, Basildon, at about 11.30am.
A spokesman from the ambulance service said: "We were called at 12.24pm to a patient in Town Square, Basildon.
"One rapid response vehicle attended.
"The patient, a woman in her 80’s, had suffered a minor head injury.
"The rapid response vehicle transferred the patient back to their home address."
Witnesses described walking beneath it just before it fell, with many saying they came close to being underneath it when it collapsed.
An HSBC Spokesperson said: “The branch is closed at present and we’re currently investigating the incident."
A spokesman from Basildon Council said: “Basildon Council closed off the area in Town Square following the incident this afternoon and has been liaising with the responsible property owners.
"The structure will be made safe and further tests will be carried out throughout the town centre by property owners.”
