A total of 1,562 crimes were reported to Essex Police across the borough of Thurrock during November 2017.

But some areas in Thurrock have vastly higher crime rates than others.

There are 16 areas in Thurrock divided by Essex Police where the total number of crimes are accumulated and stored in a database.

The most common crime reported in most areas were either anti-social behaviour or a combined category of ‘violence and sexual crimes’. However, some crimes, such as burglary and shoplifting, did rank higher than the aforementioned crimes in some areas.

Here are the rankings of each area during November 2017:

16: Corringham East – 26 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

The safest area in Thurrock according to Essex Police’s latest statistics. It is a highly industrial area, being home to London Gateway and the former Coryton Oil Refinery.

Vehicle crime was the most reported crime in this area, with seven incidents, followed by criminal damage and arson (6) and burglary (5).

14=: East Tilbury – 43 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Next on the list is East Tilbury, with 43 reported crimes. Included in this area is also the village of Linford.

Anti-social behaviour was reported more than any other type of crime in this area, with 10 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crimes (9) and burglary (8).

14=: Grays East – 43 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Grays East joined East Tilbury in 14th place on this list. This is the area just west of Chadwell, which includes Palmer’s College.

Violence and sexual crimes were the most reported to police, with 11 incidents, followed by anti-social behaviour (8), and drug crimes (8).

13: Grays Central – 48 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Grays Central comes in at 13th place, with 48 reported crimes. The ‘central’ aspect of this area is slightly misleading as it does not include the high street.

Anti-social behaviour was the most reported crime in this area, with 17 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crimes (13) and vehicle crime (5).

12: Stanford – 53 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

In 12th place is Stanford. This area covers most of Stanford-le-Hope.

More than 40 per cent of reported crimes in this area were anti-social behaviour, with 22 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crimes (10) and ‘other theft’ (5).

11: Orsett, Horndon and Bulphan – 54 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Coming in at 11th place is a combination of three villages in the west of the borough. Quite self-explanatory, it covers the three titled places.

The most reported crime here was burglary, with 13 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crime (11) and anti-social behaviour (9).

10: Grays North – 62 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Entering the top 10, Grays makes a return. This area covers the north of Grays and parts of North Stifford.

Anti-social behaviour was the most reported crime in this area, with 18 incidents, followed by violence and anti-social behaviour (12) and burglary (7).

9: Chadwell – 79 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

In at ninth place is Chadwell with 79 reported crimes. Situated between Tilbury and Grays, this area covers the whole Chadwell St Mary.

Anti-social behaviour was the most reported crime her, with 25 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crimes (16) and vehicle crime (10).

8: Belhus – 80 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Belhus came in at the middle spot with the eighth highest crime rate. This area covers parts of South Ockendon.

Anti-social behaviour was the most reported crime in the area, with 26 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crimes (25) and criminal damage and arson (7).

7: Corringham West – 86 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Unlike its neighbour, Corringham East, Corringham West came in as the area with the seventh highest crime rate in Thurrock. Also, unlike its neighbour, it covers an area with a higher concentration of people.

Violence and sexual crimes were the most reported offences in this area, with 21 incidents, followed by anti-social behaviour (18) and criminal damage and arson (11).

6: Chafford Hundred – 90 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Next on the list is Chafford Hundred. Sitting in between Grays and Lakeside, this area covers the entire town of Chafford Hundred.

Anti-social behaviour was the most reported crime in this area, with 25 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crimes (16) and criminal damage and arson (12).

5: Aveley – 91 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Entering the top five, Aveley comes next on the list with 91 reported crimes. This area covers the whole of Aveley.

Anti-social behaviour was the most reported crime in this area, with 23 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crimes (21) and ‘other theft’ (13).

4: Ockendon – 114 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

In fourth place is Ockendon with 114 reported crimes. This area covers North Ockendon and parts of South Ockendon.

Anti-social behaviour was reported to Essex Police more than any other crime in this area, with 33 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crime (30) and criminal damage and arson (9).

3: Grays South – 172 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Grays makes its final entry on the list. Although considered the south of the town, this area covers the High Street and the area around the trains station and Civic Offices. But the highest concentration of reported crimes from this area came from Seabrooke Rise and the surrounding streets.

The most reported crime was anti-social behaviour, with 51 incidents, followed by violence and sexual crimes (44) and criminal damage and arson (9).

2: Tilbury – 195 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Tilbury takes the second spot on this list with almost 200 reported crimes in a month. This area covers the whole of Tilbury including the docks.

Violence and sexual crimes were reported more than any other, with 52 incidents, followed by anti-social behaviour (43) and criminal damage and arson (23).

1: South West Thurrock – 326 crimes reported

Braintree and Witham Times:

Top of this list is South West Thurrock. A large area in size, it covers Lakeside and crosses over the A282 to Purfleet.

Although perhaps slightly surprising that this area topped the chart by such a big margin, the most reported crime was shoplifting, with 96 incidents. This may be to do with the area homing one of the largest shopping centres in the South East. This is followed by anti-social behaviour (57) and vehicle crime (51).
