Train operators have been accused of taking the pee out of football fans by running a busy service without a working toilet.

Passengers travelling on the 5.30pm Greater Anglia service between Colchester and Stratford saw other travellers relieving themselves on the platform and in between carriages because they were so desperate to use the broken facilities onboard.

Others used bags and bottles in place of the broken toilets.

The busy train was packed full of football fans heading to the London Stadium to watch West Ham United’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

One passenger said he was horrified to see someone get off an urinate in full view of others.

He said: “He went to the far end of the platform but when you have to go, you have to go.

“He had no choice.

“There were also men urinating while still on the train.

“They were peeing in bags and throwing it out of the window.”

The passenger said there was a sign on the toilet which said the toilet had been out of order since Thursday, and the football fans were caught short on the Friday.

He said paying customers should be entitled to somewhere appropriate to go to the toilet.

He said: “I know there is no legal right for a toilet on a trail but I think there should be.

“It is a basic human right in 2017.

“It was bad enough for the men.

“For the women, it was even worse.

“It is disgusting.

“You pay £22 for a return ticket.

“I made a complaint as soon as I got off at Stratford just as soon as I had been for a pee.

“It is Greater Anglia which is taking the pee.”

A spokesman for Greater Anglia apologised for the broken toilet but said it was one of only a few in their fleet.

She said:“We have been working hard to get broken toilets fixed faster and to improve their maintenance.

“We have more than 550 toilets on our trains and currently less than two per cent of our toilets are out of order.

“We have a specialist team of cleaners who work to repair toilet faults every day.

“Most faults are repaired with 24 hours, however sometimes toilets are out of order for slightly longer, as was the case on the 5.30pm Colchester Town to Stratford service on Friday.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience caused. We are in contact with the customer.”
