Tilbury Fort has finally reopened after it was closed for months of filming for an upcoming major film project.

The fort, which is situated right on the north bank of the Thames, has been closed since July 19 while filming took place for a new film based on the Peterloo Massacre, directed by award-winning director Mike Leigh.

Leigh is one of the UK’s most respected film directors with movies such as Secrets and Lies, Vera Drake and Life is Sweet.

He was won numerous top film prizes including Baftas, awards at Cannes and the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. He’s also been nominated for five Oscars.

The Peterloo Massacre was a key moment in British history when cavalry charged into a crowd of more than 60,000 peaceful protesters in St Peter’s Field, Manchester in August, 1819.

The crowds had gathered to call for parliamentary reform in a time of high unemployment and hunger.

The fort has since reopened and visitors are now welcome to enjoy the heritage site once again.

The next event to take place will be Halloween Ghost Walks where organisers promise an eerie evening tour around Tilbury Fort while hearing tales of dark deeds, ghostly apparitions and scary happenings.
